Stone's Throw Coffee Is Coming to the Former South Press Location

Wow, friends,

We’ve been keeping one very big piece of news under wraps while construction, paperwork, planning, and about a thousand other moving pieces came together behind the scenes. But we can finally say it:

Stone’s Throw Coffee is coming to the former South Press location.

And we know that sentence carries a little more weight than your average “new business coming soon” announcement.

For a lot of people in Knoxville, South Press wasn’t just a coffee shop. It was a place where people who had spent far too much of their lives wondering whether they were welcome could walk through the door and know the answer. It gave LGBTQIA2S+ folks, sober folks, artists, activists, oddballs, introverts, extroverts, chosen families, and people still figuring out where they fit a place to gather without having to make themselves smaller first. Community was forged in that space, and we would be doing both the building and the people who loved it a disservice if we moved in without acknowledging that.

We aren’t South Press, and we don’t want to pretend to be.

We’re Stone’s Throw.

But we believe there is something pretty special about getting the opportunity to build something new in a place where so much groundwork has already been laid.

We want to honor what came before us without trying to recreate it. The coffee will be ours. The menu will be ours. The weird little ideas Casey and I have been scribbling down for the last seven months will finally get to become real. There will be new traditions, new art, new events, new people walking through the doors, and probably at least a few things we haven’t even thought of yet.

What we hope carries forward is the part that mattered most: the understanding that a coffee shop can be more than a place where somebody hands you caffeine.

It can be somewhere you meet your people.

Somewhere you sit a little longer because nobody is rushing you out.

Somewhere your name, your pronouns, your family, your sobriety, your identity, your story, or whatever combination of things makes you you doesn’t need an explanation before you’re allowed to belong.

That has always been at the heart of what we wanted Stone’s Throw to become, long before we knew exactly where we would be opening our doors. Somehow, finding ourselves here feels a little bit like inheriting a responsibility along with an address.

And we take that responsibility seriously.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll finally be able to show you more of what we’ve been building: the space, the menu, the art, the people helping make it happen, and, yes, the opening date, when we are absolutely, positively sure we can give you one without immediately having to post a correction afterward. We’ve learned enough about construction timelines to know better than to tempt fate.

For now, though, we just wanted you to know where to find us: 3615 Chapman Highway, Suite A, Knoxville, TN 37920. Directions, parking, and accessibility details will live on our Visit page as we confirm them.

Soon, Stone’s Throw Coffee will be opening its doors in a place that already holds a lot of memories for this community.

We’re grateful for what was built there before us.

We’re incredibly excited about what comes next.

And more than anything, we can’t wait to fill the place with all of you.

After all this waiting, community-centered coffee really is almost just a Stone’s Throw away.

Thanks for being here,

Zoey and Casey Stone Stone’s Throw Coffee
